An Exercise in Poetry

I found this poet and thought I would share. National Poetry Day is the 22nd; my local bookstore is having a give away and discounts, if you come in and recite a poem.  I thought I would share. Maybe something like this is going on in your neck of the woods.

Newspaper+marker=Poetry
Instead of starting with a blank page, poet Austin Kleon grabs a newspaper and a permanent marker and eliminates the words he doesn’t need.—NPR’s Morning Edition
Have you heard of Austin Kleon?  He is most known for his "Newspaper Blackout Poems"-poetry made by redacting words from newspaper articles with a permanent marker. He now has a book.

I wrote another post for P; see below.  I did think this would be worth sharing.  I chose to do my horoscope on Freewill Astrology. I chose the Sacred Advertisement, below my horoscope.

SACRED ADVERTISEMENT
Even if your heart's not exactly shattered at the moment, it has no doubt been so at some time in the past. I invite you to feel a wave of sadness about your suffering, then move on to this possibility: that having a broken heart is one of the best things that can happen to you.

Why? Because it strengthens your humility, which makes you smarter. It demonstrates to you that you have a tremendous capacity for deep feelings -- far more than you're normally aware of. It breaks down defense mechanisms that have desensitized you to the world's secret beauty. It may also inspire you to treat other people's hearts with greater care, making it more likely that you'll be able to create intelligent intimacy in the future.

Well said Rob Brezsny, the man who writes this column for a local newspaper back home.

Here is what I came up with; It doesn't have the same impact, but it gives you the idea of how eliminating words can get to the heart of a profound or simple message.

Heart's sadness, broken
strengthens humility
capacity breaks defense, to the world's secret
inspire other hearts to create
Intimacy

Lisa-do a combo post. I did that last year, when I discovered the challenge on letter G. A catch up post would get you back on track! YOU can do it~
Loved the post didn't know it was national Poetry Day on the 22nd.

Ella, this reminds me a bit of found poetry. It would be fun to try it with a group because everyone would block out different words, thus find different messages and stress points. Like what you ended up with. It's rather like creating a wordle in some ways.

This is lovely and ingenious. Sort of like recycling media into poems. Love this.

Joe-the horoscopes have such great lingo; it is fun. I love your take on it~ I hope you will try it.
I copied n' pasted a horoscope in Word and then eliminated words. YOU could print it out and do the marker, too. Both fun~

Elizabeth-Yes,like a Wordle. It would be fun to do the same paragraph and see all the possibilities~
Great idea~
