5x5

Yes, you know by now, I have a thing about 5s. :D     Seth Apter had a challenge on his blog.  I was on the fence about submitting.  He is a wonderful artist, author and wears many hats.  As I was reading his post and guidelines,  I saw he had published it at 5:55pm.  I knew I had to do this challenge...  

Ten pages of art were published in Stampington's  Somerset Memories Nov/Dec issue.

 

The challenge was to mail Seth a 5x5 square sharing what would your artwork say, if it could talk?!

Seth is the author of The Pulse of Mixed Media . His passion is reflected in his generosity, to share  secrets, passions and art of artists  His book represents this community.  Since he was limited by the number of pages in the book, he decided to use the Internet, as a vehicle to extend the book.  This way he could include more artists and Seth's 5x5 Pulse Project was born.

 

  Seth put out an open call for artists to submit artwork created in response to one or more of the following questions that were part of the original book:

1. If your artwork could talk, what would it say?

2. Who has had the most impact on your creative life?

3. What is one thing you have never shared with the creative community?

Submitting artists could chose 1, 2, or all 3 of the questions and respond to each by creating artwork in any medium in the form of a 5" x 5" square. They were asked to include words as a part of their artwork as well. There was a tremendous response to this call and I will be posting each submission every Sunday throughout the months of November and December. 

No, my art wasn't chosen, for the publication, but it is fine.  I had to hurry, to make Seth's deadline and seeing five 5s made me feel I had to contribute.  I rushed and can't remember exactly what my art looks like.  It will probably be a shock, to see it.  I do remember using a Skeleton key, fabric, a sunflower button and I think a seed.  I remember after mailing it. I remember going  back online and browsing  Seth's blog.  Then I saw a piece of his art with a key like mine and I thought oh, no...does it look like I copied his idea.   Why didn't I see this before, I felt embarrassed, but then I remembered why I added the key to my 5x5 square.  The Skeleton key was one of the keys to the back porch door of my childhood home, where I spent hours, coloring, gluing and making art.  My art hangs on those walls and inside the living room, my Sunset painting hangs over the fireplace. It was my art begun. 

I had to include it!  Since I mailed it, the  home has since been sold, so this piece will mean even more, now.   

Thank you Seth for doing this~ I am thrilled to be part of your project!  I love what you are doing and sharing!  I visited Seth's blog this morning, it had a Christmas like feel for me.  It was like walking through an artist's soul.  The creative process has dark n' light moments, before the colors can be revealed.   I think artists should be renamed...maybe Rainbow Warriors  We have to fight our doubt our muse, be brave and do it anyway!  I think of this, for all artists who create-music, poems, writing, painting, mixed media, photography, etc.    

It is what we must do!
