A Cautionary Tail

Nature's Cake

 Dessert grows on my deck
 on heart shaped platters
inviting green temptation
a cautionary tail
braves the castle's giant
howling good time till ice
frosts nature's cake.

Our hound has been freaking out every time he goes outside. He runs around  the deck sniffing,  yipping and howling.   My husband told me last week he woke up and saw a rabbit on our deck.  "Right Don, sure a rabbit climbed up onto our deck and when you looked out he was climbing down the stairs.  What have you been drinking?"   I laughed.   No, I didn't believe him, but two nights ago when I let out our beagle, Buster I saw a shadow off the side of a deck.   I thought it was a mouse or a bird.  I said to Don, "Let's put out your trail camera and see for ourselves."   He was happy to confirm his story this morning, when he showed me the proof!

I was stunned!  I am glad I didn't make a bet with him-I would have lost big time!
Can you believe it?!

So I googled 'Do rabbits eat Morning Glories?'  I have a lot of them growing on my deck.  They do-they love the tender green heart shaped leaves-the tiny new ones.  Sure enough I have a few vines that are almost clean.  I did spy some more tiny green hearts.  We are putting the trail camera back out to night, to see more enchantment.  I guess my muse isn't the only one that loves my deck!  They must be really delicious to dare climb up the stairs and tempt fate. I can't imagine the scene if Peter Rabbit meets my crazy beagle, Buster-I mean the giant!

This is lovely in more ways than one, Ella. We have wild rabbits around here but I've never seen one climb stairs.
We have wild morning glory, but the rabbits seem disinterested, perhaps because it's in the back yard where our Golden Retriever hangs out. Little do the rabbits know they're a whole lot faster than Lindy.
Good work here, my friend, with the poem and the rabbit capture on camera.
Luv, K

I love the view of your front porch, Ella. That Morning Glory is magnificent. Your early morning visitor certainly is brave to hazard known dragons (or beagles) for a nibble of fresh leaves. What a lovely poem and post.

I admit I needed the pics to get the whole picture spun in your words. It's a fun, active, engaging story with a philosophical core.

I love this little poem and your picture. You have a smart bunny to know that the dog is all bark...inside the castle.

We have two rabbits and lots of food, I love walking outside and seeing them. They are afraid, even when Patches goes out, they pretend to be statues! So lovely!

Enjoy!

We've got lots of rabbits in our area this year, they are so cute. The only trouble is--coyotes are happy about it too! We're seeing them and hearing them close by as they are coming in to hunt. This was a fun read Ella, fun pics too!

Rabbits love the most beautiful plants! I can't be angry at them, though, because they're so darned CUTE! We have one that lives somewhere in our yard. I keep trying to get a photo, but I can't get close enough!

Thank you everyone! I am sorry I haven't commented sooner. I hurt my back. I have been lounging like a lizard with frozen Okra. No fun!
